Back in 2007
The 2007 is off to a raging start in 07. With some new wheels and 710's I've managed to take 2 FTD's and event wins in a row in the WOSCA spring series as well as a win in the first event in the CASC-OR Provincial Autoslalom Championships. Check Race Reports for a report on the first regional.
I've also made some changes to the videos page. I recently aquired a new video camera, which means that video footage is coming fast and furious. So instead of trying to host it all here I'm no uploading videos to youtube with a cockyracingguy channel you can find here. But fear not. Those lazy surfers among you can still go to my videos page to find linked youtube videos of yours truly.
Cocky Racing Miata Does Well in 06
Well after a year of mediocrity driving the Civic I finally located a new slalom car. I bought a 1990 Mazda Miata in early 2006. It was very much an impulse buy (so much as purchasing a car can be). It seems very straight and clean for it's age. It was painted by an idiot which I'm fairly certain is what made it affordable. Some rust is poking through, but nothing to be concerned about. So far it's been quite competitive overall with ES pax, despite it being a 1.6 and having an open differential. A string of wins in the early summer have allowed me to take the WOSCA Summer Slalom Series once again and the H.A. Wilson award is all but locked up as well. It was getting tight on the latter with Doug Elcomb racking up several event wins in his SiR. Fortunately his work travel meant I was able to stretch out a big lead based largely on number of events entered. Some new rubber for the Miata should make it quite competitive. The plan is to retire the 15" R's and put a set of 13" A032Rs on the Panasports. The buy another set of 13" Wheels for a set of 710's. It's going to be an expensive spring as I'll need new street tires when the snow melts as well.
Since the Miata is still stock there are no articles for it, but I have started a pictures page. If you have any questions about the miata then I HIGHLY suggest checking out miata.net.
2006 Season is moving along
The Western Ontario Sports Car Association has secured a new lot at Hiwatha Horse Park, the horse track in Sarnia. Although a long way from home for me (now a 2 hour drive). The lot is the biggest we've used since I joined the club (9 years) with excellent pavement and onsite food.
CASC-OR Solo-2 is still going strong. I'm taking a year off regionals but the series is looking good with the first half now done. Most clubs have made a concerted effort to improve the quality of the venues and it's paid off with some great lots and good competition for 06. Check out the series info here.
Farewell Prelude
For those of you that don't already know the Cocky Racing Prelude is no more. It was my own stupid fault too. I did a winter slalom and forgot to check the oil. The old H22 oil starvation bit me in the ass and I spun a rod-bearing. Lacking the money to fix it the car has gone on to race car heaven (aka the Toronto used car market). The new owner told me he rebuilt the motor and it was running well. Soldier on old friend, soldier on.
Anyway, on to new things. Desperate to get to work I acquired a 92 DX Civic Hatch, which has served me well for daily driving duty and proved a formidable HS weapon for both WOSCA and regional competiton. Unfortunately the combination of Cocky and beater civic with no shocks and bent frame was no match for Hanif and a well sorted 92 CX... I blame the car. But I managed to repeat the WOSCA H.A. Wilson award and grab the WOSCA Summer Series.
Then came 2006. A revamp of the classes for 2006 put the cocky civic up against 2000 SiR's which simply wasn't going to do. Fortunately it wouldn't have to do as I managed to find a nice little Miata in my price range. It's and early one with no frame stiffening elements and an open diff, but it's proving competitive non-the-less with two wins in two tries with WOSCA (one on the Yokos to boot) and a 2nd in class to a 2nd gen Miata on 710's at PITTL. So things are looking good for another H.A. Wilson trophy this year.
